Day 5 - Finishing Touches
_____ 5.1. Today, the sign painter will paint your boat's name on the transom. Be sure that the transom and/or sides are ready for the sign painter to work.
_____ 5.2. Cut and attach the rub rail to fit. Mark where screws will attach the breast hook. Clamp the rub rails in place and fasten them to the sheer board, avoiding the screws that attach the breast hook. Fasten the rub rail screws through the rub rail and into the sideboard. When attaching the rub rails, fully countersink 1-1/4" screws approximately 8” apart, roughly evenly on each side of the frames but not into the frames. Be careful not to over-countersink or over-tighten the screws. Stain or paint the cut ends. Do not fill the rub rail screw holes.
_____ 5.3. Install the oarlock sockets into the oarlock socket blocks with two 1/4" machine screws, washers, and nuts prior to mounting the oarlock blocks on the boat. Pre-drill the two screw holes in the appropriate locations to provide a clearance hole for the machine screws.
_____ 5.4. Place the oarlock socket blocks aft of the middle seat on each side based on the boat's projected loading (e.g., one person, two persons, plus gear, etc.). The basic dimension is 7” to 10” from the oar block center line to the rear edge of the center seat. Modify this dimension to suit individual preferences. Remember that when rowing, the operator will face rearward.
_____ 5.5. Place the oar socket blocks, pre-drill, and fasten with four 1-5/8” screws. Tighten the screws by hand.
_____ 5.6. Complete any unfinished operations, such as drilling the hole in the top of the stem, cutting tops off frames, installing seat rails, seats, clamps, and rub rails. Also, paint or stain cut ends.
_____ 5.7. After you complete your final Crew Check, start cleaning up!
Day 5 is done - time to clean up and celebrate!
