Day 3 - Raising the Sides
Step 1 - Installing the Frames/Ribs
_____ 3.1. With the bottom complete, turn the boat over (right side up).
_____ 3.2. Use scrap wood to keep the boat from rocking on the keel.
_____ 3.3. Lay out nine frames on each side. Measure along the inside edge of the sideboard starting at the rear of the transom and place a mark every 16”.
_____ 3.4. Use a combination square to draw a vertical line on the inside of the sideboard. Hold or clamp the frame to the sideboard along the rearward side of the vertical line.
_____ 3.5. From inside the boat, countersink a 1/8” pilot hole in the lower portion of the frame, then fasten to the chine with a 2” screw. Avoid drilling completely through the sideboard.
_____ 3.6. From outside the boat, fasten the upper portion of the sideboard to the frame using one 1-5/8” screw. The lower portion of the sideboard was fastened to the chine earlier, so the screw should enter the frame above the chine. Continue to attach all frames.
_____ 3.7. Attach the stern frames. Check that the frame has a “P” for port (left side) and an “S” for starboard (right side). Countersink two 1/8” holes in the side of the frame. The higher of the two screws should be no more than 11-1/2” from the bottom of the stern frame. Use 2” screws to fasten the stern frame to the transom. Align the outer edge of the stern frame with the transom edge.
Step 2 - Installing The Sideboards
_____ 3.8. Using this frame structure, attach the middle 5-1/2" sideboard. Starting at the stem, repeat the attachment and bending process from Day 1 using 2” screws. The stem ends of the middle and shear boards may require trimming at the lower edges to allow the sideboard to have full contact with the inner stem. Apply caulk, use washers, and attach the sideboard to the stem and transom with three 2” screws in each location.
_____ 3.9. Attach the middle sideboards with two 1-5/8” screws into each frame location. Fasten as you go. Use clamps to hold the sideboard to the frames and to the sideboard below at each location.
_____ 3.10. As you go, fill screw holes with filler so it can dry prior to sanding later in the day.
_____ 3.11. The top sideboard has the sheer precut. Be sure to put the tall end forward. “Dry-fit” sheer boards to see whether the top points of the two sides are at the same height. The higher of the two may require trimming prior to installing the sheer boards.
_____ 3.12. The sheer boards should be attached to the inner stem and transom using caulk, washers, and three 2” screws at the inner stem and two screws at the transom.
_____ 3.13. Attach the sheer boards to the frames using 1-5/8” screws for the bottom row of screws. Use 1-1/4” screws for the top row of screws as described below.
_____ 3.14. The top row of screws on the sheer boards should be 1-1/4” screws placed approximately 1-1/4” below the top edge of the sheer board.
_____ 3.15. On each side of the boat, mark a line from the top of the sheer board to the bottom sideboard aligned with the front edge of the inner stem. Then, carefully cut sideboards flush at the stem, matching the front of the lower sideboards. Avoid cutting into the front stem.
_____ 3.16. Do not cut frames until after you install the rub rails and clamps. Use the rub rails and clamps to determine the frame cut angle.
_____ 3.17. Remove and return the spreader board. Remove fender washers one at a time, replacing screws before going on to the next washer. Return fender washers.
_____ 3.18. Lay out the top of the transom and cut it or have it cut by the Crew. Sand the transom and apply stain or primer.
OR
_____ 3.18. A Crew member will cut the transom arc. Sand the transom and apply stain or primer.
_____ 3.19 Stain or prime six 1 x 2’s that will be used for seat rails, clamps and rub rails.
_____ 3.20. Stain or prime the oar blocks and the breast hook.
_____ 3.21. Stain or prime 1" x 10” seat boards; cut to their final length later.
_____ 3.22. Cut off the top of the inner stem flush with the top of the sheer boards.
_____ 3.23. Attach the outer stem with two 5/16” x 8” carriage bolts. The outer stem is pre-drilled with 5/16” holes 4” and 16” from the bottom. Clamp the outer stem in the correct position, then drill 5/16” holes through the inner stem, using the outer stem holes as guides. Depending on screw locations, the screws holding the side boards may need to be temporarily removed prior to drilling into the inner stem to avoid drilling into those screws. Reinstall the removed screws after the carriage bolts installing the carriage bolts.
_____ 3.24. Apply caulk to the outer stem and insert the carriage bolts. Install washers and nuts on the carriage bolts inside the boat, then tighten down the carriage bolts. Drill a 1/2” hole in the top of the outer stem for securing the bow line.
_____ 3.25. With the sides complete, starting no later than 3 p.m., apply filler to screw holes, sand, and apply a coat of primer or stain to the sides and transom.
STOP! Do not proceed until you have a Crew Check.
Day 3 is done - time to clean up and celebrate!
