Tool and Equipment List

Tools and Equipment Provided by the Builder

Boat building teams should avoid relying on tools or equipment shared with other teams. Teams often perform similar repetitive operations at the same time. For that reason, each team should have a full complement of tools and equipment available for its own use.

Marking Tools

Pencils - Bring a few #2 pencils for precise measurements and a carpenter's pencil

Power Tools

Builders should have a cordless drill and a separate cordless driver to avoid repeatedly switching between drill bits and driver bits during repetitive procedures.

Battery-powered (cordless) drill

Battery-powered (cordless) impact driver

Battery charger for drill and impact driver

Extra batteries for drill and driver (optional, but strongly recommended)

Electric sander with sandpaper - 80, 20, and 220 grit (optional, but strongly recommended)

Hand Tools

Drill Bits - 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2”

Countersink bit for #8 screw

T25 Star Drive bit for #8 stainless steel deck screws

Pull Saw – Should be sharp and ready for repetitive use - see additional notes in Tool Tips

Block plane - 6" to 7" in length -  Should be sharp and ready for repetitive use

Rubber mallet (white if possible, as black mars (leaves marks on) the wood)

Hammer

Sliding T Bevel - Also called a bevel gauge, bevel square, or false square

Combination Square

4' Level

Small Caulk Gun - Required for 3M 4200 Sealing Compound

Tape Measure - 16’ or longer

Small Metal Putty Knife

Clamps

3” C-clamps – 4 or more

12” Wooden hand screw clamps – Minimum of 2

Bailer - Gallon size - Can be made from a plastic container

Safety glasses for each boat builder

One USCG-approved life jacket for each boat occupant

One USCG-approved throwable flotation cushion per boat

Paint and Stain

The museum supplies water-based paints and stain for each builder. The colors include red paint for the bottom, white paint for the sides, and cedar stain for general use. Boat builders may supply their own paint and stain if desired. Any paint or stain the builder supplies, however, should be water-based rather than oil-based to ensure compatibility with the supplied materials. Water-based paints dry in time for this boat-building process; oil-based paints dry slowly and are messy!
